We invite you to attend one of our three lectures by local historians.

Lectures will be held between 2-3 p.m. in the Stupp Center at Tower Grove Park. Admission is free, and these are open to the public. Lectures will have limited in-person capacity.

Patrick Murphy will discuss his book “The Irish in St. Louis: From Shanty to Lace Curtain”  with particular focus on why so many Irish were attracted to St. Louis in the 19th Century, their struggle to overcome Nativist and anti-Catholic prejudices, how they eventually assimilated, and the impact they had upon the region.


St. Louis LGBTQ Historian, Steven Brawley

Steven Louis Brawley is a public historian noted for his research related to LGBTQIA+ and pop culture topics. He is the founder of the St. Louis LGBT History Project and Executive Vice President of Area Resources for Community and Human Services (ARCHS). He is also the author of Gay and Lesbian St. Louis and a frequent lecturer at educational institutions.

St. Louis Photographer- Richard Fuhrmann

Richard Fuhrmann (b. 1880) was a native-born St. Louisan who learned the art of photography from the influential Emil Boehl starting at the age of 16. Although trained as a medical doctor, Fuhrmann practiced photography as his hobby throughout his entire life and assembled one of the foremost collections of St. Louis photographs in existence. Historian Tom Gronski will discuss the rediscovery these St. Louis treasures.
